We all know when we mention the words “safety training” to employees they have preconceptions. Getting stuck on a boring, technical course. I’ve seen the fear in their eyes at the beginning of the course! But after 20 minutes they begin to realise it’s going to be an enjoyable experience!
Whether you deliver food safety and health & safety training yourself, or organise training for your team, here we share with you the latest in training techniques and how you can use them to take the effectiveness of your staff training to another level.
STS are always finding new ways of making training meaningful, fun and remembered. We have recently introduced Brain Friendly Learning into the way we deliver our courses. It’s a concept based on the MASTER Model by Colin Rose and The Theory of Multiple Intelligences by Howard Gardner. At the core of this accelerated learning method is how we acquire, remember and apply information, which is important to employers because they want to see long term results from the money invested in training.
STS have updated our training materials to incorporate brain friendly techniques and the results are amazing! The examination results were great, but most importantly the candidates went away with a purpose to improve food safety in their place of work. I was really impressed by their enthusiasm and creativity in how people wanted to learn, especially with microbiology, which was traditionally a difficult subject to explain. I had students communicating the characteristics of Campylobacter through a live news report which made everyone laugh. Another group memorably mimed the 5 steps to risk assessment. This is achieved through Brain Friendly Learning.
Training needs to be more than endless PowerPoint slides and a trainer who likes the sound of their own voice, it’s about unlocking the potential within your employees by putting them at the centre of learning.
Brain Friendly Learning courses are notoriously expensive, but they are worth it! However, we do recognise training budgets are tight during the current economic situation, so STS have incorporated the “best bits” of accelerated learning into a 1 day training skills workshop, suitable for anyone who delivers training. Not only will you learn the latest innovative learning methods, but also how to manage you lessons better through lesson plans and assessment.
